Tlaxcala y Cacaxtla

img The well-preserved architecture of Tlaxcala City introduces visitors to the diverse cultures that have contributed to the city’s history.

The town’s historic center contains many examples of 16th-century buildings, such as the Government Palace, which houses Desiderio Hernández Xochitiotzin’s murals depicting ancient Tlaxcaltecan history.

The towering parish church of San José stands out as an example of the Tlaxcaltecan-Baroque style.

Other colonial buildings include the XVI century Franciscan Monastery, the government palace and the Basilica of our Lady of Ocotlan, place where Maria appeared in 1541.

A wonderful destination. Cacaxtla is a well-known archaeological site in Tlaxcala, but beyond architecture, its attraction is wall paintings: one of the few Pre-Hispanic murals that have survived until our day.

The challenge for archaeologists in this site has been to find a way of preserving the original paintings from natural deterioration (rain and air in themselves represent a threat), and this is why large metal roofs have been placed over the site to protect it from the elements.
